This video resurfaced on my Facebook today. It's a video of a family getting shot by paint-balls to represent swear words and graphic aggression shown in media outlets today. Could you imagine if media was this blatantly harmful how we would change our viewing habits? Why is it that we allow our viewing habits to be so relaxed when media is this harmful but in a more subtle and conniving way?
I think it is cool that companies like Vidangel are advocating for protecting families from the subtle dangers of the media. The emotional and mental harm is just as real as the physical harm depicted. It should be a wake-up call to all of us but is it?
Great point! I liked in class when we talked about how even LDS are not particularly offended by violence in the media. Even though we show some offense to sex and profanity, it is scary that we've become so desensitized to media violence.
ReplyDeleteI think the psychological and emotional damage and desensitization are scarier than physical pain. At least with physical pain there are clear signals of "this is not okay and is in fact quite detrimental", where the others just sneak in until you're mid-breakdown and think "oh...".
ReplyDeleteI agree - I think if it's not blatant, we have a tendency to rationalize viewing bad media. "Oh, this scene will only last a minute, I'll be fine". But really, once it's been seen, it's been embedded into your mind, those images and words are there for good. Thanks for this reminder to be better about my media choices!
